A Bold Proposition

We all have those events we can look back on and see how they served as a turning point in our lives. We may not have known it at the time, but looking back we can see how our lives would never be the same. Like  just another night shift at the deli when a good looking, very tired 25 year old walked in and ordered coffee and a muffin. Now he is sitting in my living room watching football.

A changing moment for me, regarding art, was the requirement given by Mr. Brooks to go up to the second floor of the library where there was a stash of thick heavy books, containing some of the most beautiful illustrations ever done, and find three pictures that impressed us. I was introduced to art in the 70’s, which was a ressurection of art done years and years before. These books became a treasure. They are the yearbooks of American Illustration. Well, the other day I was looking for something else online and stumbled across their website. They are taking submissions for Illustrators 52. It’s an open contest. The deadline? October 30. Let me help you understand. I told Sawaya, an avid golf and Tiger Woods fan that being included in this would be like being in a tournament with Tiger. You might be 80th place, you may never even see him, but you’d BE IN THE TOURNAMENT.  Some of you may scoff comepletely, but this is a DREAM and let me chase it. So how does this relate to the blog? I would like this to be my October 30th entry. BUT it would require cheating because I’m not about to limit myself to one day.  I will work on this along with my other projects for the day, and include YOU in the process. I will be posting my sketches and my progress and asking for your opinions. Also… help me out. WHat shall I do?? I want to illustrate something well known. Alice in Wonderland , the village blacksmith? These have been suggested to me… One of my friends gave a good suggestion…I should do what I do best. So think of something that complements my style. Something that can be stylized…preferable have a woman with huge hair in it.:) What are your thoughts? And do I have you permission to tweak the rules a little? Here’s the link. Check it out. http://societyillustrators.org/index.cms

I vote ….GO FOR IT!!!

Hey, I just entered three or four pieces in the competition myself. Go for it. Enter in the unpublished category, as self-promotional materials. You should also look into the Society of Illustrators LA, they are more open minded than the NY branch.

Sounds amazing! Go for it girl! I’m sure you’re def not in “80th” place considering what you’ve put up the last few days :D What about Jack and the Bean Stalk? (Daniel’s idea)

Comment by Susanna Hindman

They are your rules;-) you can do what you want. I don’t think anyone will complain. How about BlueBeard? I know it’s kind of a dark story but it could be intresting to try.

is blue beard different than black beard? one of my friends suggested a pirate piece…

Comment by marylekoshereillustrated

yeah. It’s a French fairy tale by Charles Perrault. Like most fairy tales if you read the original version it’s alittle darker than the kid version.

Go for it!!
